John Shairs and Wendy Flemister-Shairs met and married in the late 90s, drawn together by their shared passion for health and wellness. However, it was the idea of cultivating their own vegetables that rekindled memories of their childhoods in Massachusetts. Transitioning from their backgrounds in health, they embarked on a journey into agriculture, nurturing their own food and Farmacy for several years before seizing the opportunity to grow as "incubator farmers" with the New Entry Sustainable Farming Project.
Certified herbalists, they initially practiced permaculture in their Danvers, MA yard, harnessing the healing properties of herbs and advocating for their use. Their exploration of herbs as both medicine and companion plants with vegetables has become intrinsic to their lifestyle. In 2014, they co-founded Nettlenook Farm with a mission to restore land and foster community, dedicating themselves to continuous learning in farming methods and crop cultivation.
Today, they serve their local community and colleagues with CSAs, alongside offering herbal classes and a line of skincare products, including tinctures, salves, and teas. Their transformation from health advocates to senior farmers has been a lifelong odyssey, culminating in the joy of providing fresh, local, organically and sustainably grown food and herbs to their community.
We're committed practicing sustainable, organic farming methods that prioritize wellness of our bodies, and our land.
Our hand-cultivated herbs and produce are grown in ways that support the health of the soil, the water, the air, the atmosphere, and our community.
Employing plant rotation with nutrient-rich cover crops and minimum tillage practices, we maintain an undisturbed ecological balance, while building up natural, organic matter and beneficial microbes.
Founded upon the belief of restoration of land and community, we practice sustainable farming to leave the land better than we found it.
